Durable, no leaks, reliable hose retraction, and ideal length for small shop.
By Candid Reviewer
The "PowRyte 500017 Elite Retractable Air Hose Reel with 3/8-Inch by 25-Feet Rubber Air Hose" is a great choice for someone working in a small shop like mine (2-car garage). While many other reels have 50' of hose, I rarely have need for that much, and I don't relish the idea of having to manage that much slack in the air line. Instead, I mounted this 25' unit on a rolling shop cart so that I can move the hose reel and the compressor closer to the desired work area. In practice, I usually only need to pay out about 6' to 10' of air hose to get the job done, as much of the time, I'm working on a project right on top of the aforementioned cart.
The unit is quite hefty. I haven't weighed it, but I would estimate that it is between 15 and 20 lbs. You will need some substantial lag screws or through bolts to attach it to a solid mounting surface. In my case, I mounted it on the bottom of my rolling shop cart using 3/8" x 2" bolts backed by fender washers for additional support. This made for a very solid mount that does not budge at all when I pull on the hose.
The winding spring on my unit is also quite hefty. A mild tug causes the hose to retract with some force, and I find I need to pinch the hose loosely in my grip to slow its retraction so that it does not "whip" or "flail" it's way back onto the reel. I think this is desirable, as other hose reels I've seen have the opposite problem of a spring so weak that they cannot retract all of the slack. My reel will definitely draw up all the slack, even if I move the round plastic hose stop all the way to the very end of the hose.
This reel INCLUDES a short secondary hose (approx. 3') to connect the reel to the compressor. You will need to purchase the appropriate fittings for each end, but they should thread on easily to the standard threaded ends of this hose. In my case, I attached 1/4" quick release fittings, using teflon/seal tape to ensure a good tight seal.
My air compressor tops out at 120psi, but at that pressure, there are absolutely NO leaks in my reel unit. The hose marking suggest that 300psi is the max pressure for this hose, but I have no way to test if it can handle that kind of pressure. Regardless, for my needs, this has been a very good hose and reel combo, and I see no reason to doubt that it will last a good long time.
The reel guide has four nylon rollers (one on each side of the rectangular opening) that protect the hose from chafing against the metal support arm as you pay out or retract the hose. They seem adequately durable and effective. The support arm itself can be rotated 90 degrees so that the hose reels out the top/bottom (depending on how you mount it), or out the side face. For my application, I turned the guide so that it holds the hose guides down near the mounting bracket. To allow for this, I had to expand an existing cutout in the arm (using a metal cutting blade on my jigsaw) to slightly increase the clearance around one of the nuts that holds the catch for the reel ratchet mechanism. It was a minor modification, and something you would only need to do if you want the hose guides to be positioned right next to the mounting base. I wanted that because I mounted mine standing up (as pictured) and needed the hose to exit the cart at a low point. If you're mounting this in an open area, however, the existing mounting holes will allow you to rotate which way the guides face by 90 degrees without modifying anything.
All in all, I feel this reel was a very good investment. The hose alone would have been $20-$30, so it seems perfectly reasonable to pay an additional $30 for a durable reel that retracts reliably and mounts securely. This is much nicer than anything I could build at that cost, unless I were to make a hand-crank (manually retracting) version. If you're looking for a nice 25' air hose that retracts, I recommend this one highly.

High Quality Hose and Reel
By Alexandria Edwards
The hose itself is nice quality; it is made of rubber, which means you don't have to worry about it slipping in your hands or about any sort of plastic coating, which can easily get dirty or damaged by heat. The reel also works well and the auto-lock and recoil both work wonderfully without any issues. Definitely the sort of hose that can be used both in auto shops or simply for personal use.

Great Recoil Strength
Great hose reel that feels durable and can stand up to constant rough use. The recoil speed and strength is very good, and the hose is light enough that it can still be easily returned to the reel even if it is mounted higher on the wall. The hose itself has been dragged across the floor without any punctures or damages to the flow of air. Very happy the way this product works!
