This Freeplay radio packs all the ingenuity of the original Freeplay into a more compact, lightweight design. It features the same battery-free power supplied by a hand crank or solar power. The hand crank works by winding a carbon-steel spring, which connects through a transmission to drive a DC generator when unwinding, and just 60 turns of the crank keep this little radio rocking for 15 hours. The radio gets good reception in both the AM and FM bands, and the speaker has great sound quality. At only 2-1/8 pounds, this radio is half as heavy as its predecessor, making it even better for packing to the beach or on camping trips. This is also a great radio to have in an emergency situation when power may not be available and good information is indispensable. It's also great for construction job sites--just crank it up in the morning and it'll play all day.
