Unexpected Snow, These Still Glow!
By Liberty Zen
I'm using solar lighting as I re-make my yard and garden areas. With these, I tested string lights from three other companies, all on the same day for easy comparison. I'm either dedicated or crazy, not that it's necessarily an "either/or scenario".
When I unboxed these, they included everything I expected. There is a stake to go in the ground if that is how you're using them. There's a connector to attach the stake to the solar panel, the panel, and a string of lights. The lights are shipped in a bundle, but every single company I ordered from shipped the same way. They're not fun to untangle, but since I'm able to stop dragging extension cords all over when I decorate for holidays, it's an even trade.
This is super easy to "assemble". Put the stake in the ground, put the panel on the connector, slide connector over stake. Kindergarteners could assemble these with little instruction, I believe. No, I'm not encouraging illegal child labor, I'm just saying it's very simple and requires little physical strength or dexterity. I do wish that the stake were made of metal, because I'll use these during the summer and will have to take them out of the ground for mowing. But my husband, who actually mows, has said it's not a big deal.
I placed each set of lights with the solar panels facing the same direction. I didn't "un-bundle" them first, I did that later, because I wasn't ready to string them up on the house. I set them out at about 10am on an overcast winter day in Ohio. I didn't have high hopes, because there just wasn't much sunshine to be had. I went out after dinner to make sure they were on on the correct setting to turn on when it got dark. My plan was to check these at bedtime, and then again in the morning to see if they lasted all night. We were expecting snow the next day, but not until after noon, so I had plenty of time. Or not. I fell asleep without remembering to check them, and woke to 5 little glowing mounds under 4 inches of snow at 6am. There should have been 6, but one of the other styles I was testing didn't work. These did!
Please understand that when I say "glowing", I don't mean "lighting up the porch". These lights aren't made for that, they're made for subtlety and beauty. There were places where the lights were peeking out on the sides, or without too much real snow coverage, and they twinkled. What you should hear is that they worked, even though I didn't use them properly. These are outdoor lights, and snow won't hurt them, but leaving them all bundled probably wasn't my very best plan.
After spreading towels on my dining room floor, I got all my little "experiments", knocked off what snow I could, brought them inside, and strung them out to dry and measure. The solar panel measures about 3"x5", and you have about 6 feet of cord between the panel and the first light. The lights are tiny, which gives rise to the term "fairy lights", but would be perfect for use as holiday decorations or in your summer outdoor space. There is about 4-1/2" between each light, allowing you to place them close together for a brighter effect, or farther apart for a "starry" effect. The full cord measured right at 65', as advertised.
Unfortunately, the pictures I tried to take of the "glowing" just don't work on camera. If you've tried to photograph light, you know how temperamental that can be. I hope to update once we get a break in the weather, or once they're actually installed in the summer.
I was able to receive a discount on my first purchase of these lights for the purpose of testing and review. I actually test and try everything I review, and my thoughts, stories, and opinions are my own, for better or worse. I hope this helps you find the string lights that will work best for you. If it does, you could help me in return by pressing the "yes" button below. Thank you!

I love how these look in my back yard!
I purchased these Solar Lights HDS-TEK Decorative Solar Powered Christmas Lights 200 LED String Light for Garden, Lawn, Patio, Xmas Tree, Wedding, Party, Outside, Holiday, Indoor, Outdoor Decorations (Warm White) to hang on my fence near my firepit and wood pile in my back yard. I wanted something that didn't require me to run an extension cord all the way across my yard, since the area I wanted to put them is in the far back corner of the yard. I also wanted something that wouldn't be too bright, but rather create a nice abiance and privide a little light when going to get more wood for the firepit. These are pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
What I like most:
- warm white color is perfect
- solar powered, so doesn't require electric
- easy to use
- very festive
- they can be left on and will automatically shut off and on at dusk/dawn
Details worth mentioning:
- I'm going to have to mount the panel to my fence so that it's getting the maximum amount of sun exposure, but that'll be an easy fix
- they get tangled easily, but now that they're up, that's not an issue. Just be very careful while installing them not to get them tangled.
- the first night I used them I left them on when I went to bed and I looked out the back window when I woke up and they were not illuminated. This was the first time they had been used, so it could have been that they weren't fully charged, or it could be that they won't, in fact, stay illuminated the stated 10-20 hours. I can't think of a time I would ever need to have them on for more than 10 hours, let alone 20 hours, so this isn't really an issue for me.
I am planning on purchasing another set or two to decorate more of the back yard. I just love how these look. I may even get some for the kids club house. I'm also thinking about getting a set to keep with our camping gear, so we can have some soft light around our campsites at night.

I love these LEDs!
By Amazon Customer
[[VIDEOID:793bc79a7b17bc47bda38a05ecfe3994]]My family spent $30 on outdoor LED lights at a hardware store.
The bulbs were fairly large, but the strand was not very long.
What is more, the bulbs never worked; we put them outside and they filled with water!
I am truly impressed with these LED lights as an alternative.
Solar power and water resistance mean a beautiful soft white glow anywhere outdoors and no maintenance fees.
These lights worked brilliantly out of the box and are even more beautiful illuminating my backyard pergola tonight at dusk.
The attached photos and video show what I did with a single strand; the lights can be made to glow steady or to blink as shown in the video.
Disclaimer: I received a great discount on these lights in exchange for an honest review.
But, remember, I wasted $30 on inferior lights first....
