The most noticeable difference between the Powermatic 15-inch planer and the competition is that the motor on the former is beneath the cutter, housed inside a one-piece stand. One advantage is the lower center of gravity, so there's no chance of the planer tipping if the user is planing long boards with no tailer. The second helpful feature is the pair of steel return rollers for sliding the work back over the top rather than carrying or carting it. This is especially handy for people working on their own. Having top access to blade changes is also convenient and much faster with no motor in the way. This burly machine has lockable casters built into the base of the unit. The on/off switch is also built into the cabinet on the right side for easiest access. The infeed and outfeed tables each have three rollers and are the only items requiring mounting, resulting in a quick setup. Powermatic provides a knurled-steel infeed roller for best grab of the workpiece, and a rubber outfeed roller that won't leave grease or marks on the fine-finished side. We also like the smooth-cranking operation that leaves the cutterhead in place and raises the precision-ground table. For serious home woodworkers who have decided to upgrade from a benchtop and owners of small to midsize cabinetry and furniture shops, this planer is just right. --Nancy Gleason

The one-piece cast-iron table provides greater infeed and outfeed support of long stock, for more accurate planing.
