We're impressed, too, with the patented three-speed transmission (offering 0-450, 0-1,450 and 0-2,000) for whatever material you're drilling into. Its max speed of 2,000 rpm is 38 percent faster than high speed. We like the all-metal ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws because we've had a bit slip every now and then, and the jaws help keep a tight grip on the shank. It's well-balanced, comfortable to grip and a joy to use.

The DC987 18 Volt XRP 1/2-inch drill/driver uses a DeWalt built high-torque, high efficiency motor to deliver 500 in.-lbs. of torque for drilling large diameter holes and driving large screws. This XRP drill comes equipped with a patented 3-speed transmission. The 3-speed option allows the drill to be set at the optimum speed range for the application being performed to maximize performance. The DC987 has a max speed of 2,000 RPM which is 38% faster than high speed. All XRP drills feature a 1/2-inch all metal, ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws to prevent bit slipping and bit fall out. Every XRP drill is powered by an XRP extended run-time battery that gives the drill long run-time and battery life. The DC987 offers superior ergonomics providing optimal balance, comfort, and weight to minimize user fatigue. XRP drills are built to allow for the standard nut drivers, screwdriver, and bit tip holders to be stored on the tool. The DC987KA includes the drill/driver, two XRP extended run-time batteries, one-hour charger, double-ended screwdriver bit, 360-degree side handle, and carrying case.
